Revolution and Evolution of a Website
By Michael Hamann

Nov. 12, 2004
Five years ago in my enthusiasm for College Basketball and specifically Titan Basketball I launched a website using the services of a major conglomerate of sports related news on the Internet, this was known as rivals.com. The goal was to bring Titan fans of all sports, the news and information they deserve, fast and accurate. We covered all sports, from Men’s and Women’s Basketball, to Golf, Cross Country, heck I might have even done an article on the fencing team. I am confident that the website was responsible for moving the authorized Detroit Titan Athletics Website (detroittitans.com) along in it’s quality and timeliness of information, frankly we were beating them to information and giving more information then they could provide. Before you went to bed or when you woke up in the morning you could be sure that we would have the scores, the highlights, and the interviews better then anyone else.

In 2002 however Rivals.com decided to disband into competing sports servers leaving smaller schools with the inability to continue operating a website hosted by them. The favoring of larger schools and conferences not only is a problem in scheduling opponents, but also in hosting of websites.

I still had a passion for news and Titan Sports, specifically Titan Men’s Basketball I refused to let it die completely and I was committed to making sure that fans could have a forum for there enthusiasm, venting there frustrations, or just giving there two cents worth. So in late 2002-2003 I created a short lived forum via voy.com, this wasn’t that well received by many of the readers, but it was at least a stopgap to keep fans in touch. In the meantime I decided to create a very pathetic version of what we are today in detroittitanhoops.com, I purchased the website address via register.com and the site was born this too has evolved.

In 2003 a supporter of Titan Basketball, Blair Adams, in frustration over page load time and user friendliness of the website, decided enough was enough (I agreed with him there were serious issues) and created a new message board via his company digitaldestinies.com. After some lengthy deliberation (I felt as though this was a take over attempt, ha ha, that sounds pretty cool doesn’t it? Your company is so viable that someone wants to take it over, ha ha.) we came to a mutual agreement and set out to get things back on track amidst my getting married and having our first child. Blair and I met on occasion to try and get the website back to it’s previous format. Along with some other individuals we continued to meet and share a beer or two at Marinelli’s in Madison Heights, talk about the Titans, plan strategy for the website.

There were definitely some positives. The Game Calendar, fantastic graphics, Titan downloads, and a new improved message board. There were the negatives as well, lack of progress, poor communication between site administrators, lack of attention to needs. Although I think that things could have been handled better between Blair Adams and myself i.e. communication from Blair on meetings, showing up when expected, or on my part in understanding his time constraints and the growth of his business which did not afford him the time he may have anticipated being able to devote. I have come to understand this now and appreciate it. His contributions to the website despite obstacles is immeasurable.

In order to make progress with the website though, I have via Blair’s help in transitioning, enlisted the service of another Titan Alumnus, Steve Aiello. Steve currently works for Ford Motor Company as a Project Manager in the IT Application Development Group. Although Steve probably doesn’t have the same passions about Titan Basketball as many of us do, he is making progress, starting with his purchase of a season ticket package 2 years ago. I am confident though that he will take on the challenge of continuing the progress we have made over the years.

We will be undergoing some updates in the next several weeks and months, including more stories, interviews, and stats. Some of the changes have already begun. I ask for your patience as we undergo this transformation. I always welcome comments, suggestions, your articles, and your financial support.

Thank you for your continued support of detroittitanhoops.com. I look forward to the Revolution of our evolution together.
